Hello! My name is Amanda Vollers, I am a practicing artist who is also passionate about educating children in the visual arts. I am interested in helping students become confident, trusting, expressive artists and genuinely well-mannered, kindhearted people. At a young age I have always dreamed of becoming my own version of the art teachers that have helped me shape my artistic identity. These very special teachers have inspired me to pursue education.

I have dedicated my studies in higher education to visual art and teaching young artists. I have earned a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art from Long Island University, a Master’s Degree in Art Education from Brooklyn College as well as a NYS K-12 teaching certification in Visual Art.

I am confident working in an array of media and pride myself on my diversity as an artist, working both two and three-dimensionally. I have had the pleasure of working with a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds and levels of artistic development. I have experience managing and teaching classes with large groups of up to 35 students and differentiating my instruction for each student’s individual needs. I believe my success has come from communicating clear goals, committing to routines and structure, setting high expectations, getting to know my students and creating a warm, welcoming classroom community.

I truly believe that all students are capable of being successful in the art room with proper instruction, practice and guidance. Success is relative. What is considered successful for one student may look different for another. The beauty of making art is that each student has the opportunity to start where he or she is comfortable and make incremental improvements in his/her work. The artwork produced is supplementary to the wide variety of habits of mind students learn and develop through art making. The arts have the ability to teach craft, persistence through struggle, self-efficacy, and flexibility. Students can learn that there may be multiple solutions to a single problem which allows them to celebrate multiple perspectives and become open to accepting diverse ideas. Unlike other subject areas, the arts have the power to teach kids to make judgements in the absence of rules.
