High School students in Studio Art practiced creating radially symmetrical designs. Through the use of pattern and repetition students created visually interesting mandala drawings. As a skill building exercise each student created a pattern reference guide in their sketchbooks to use as inspiration while generating design ideas. After a peer critique, students chose their most successful designs to expand into a final mandala. Students then finished their mandalas by developing a color scheme and practicing saturation and gradation with colored pencil.
