Negative Space Drawings
High school students created negative space drawings using their observational drawing skills. This unit was carefully scaffolded through various lessons and situated after a skill-building unit. This strategic planning helped students build confidence in drawing. Each student explored composition and accuracy through preliminary thumbnail drawings in their sketchbooks. Students sketched each set-up (plants, skeleton, drawing mannequins, and stools) before choosing their most successful to enlarge for a final composition using colored pencil. Students expanded upon their prior knowledge of drawing and explored new concepts such as color scheme, pattern, texture, positive/negative space, refinement and craft.
