Oil Pastel Observations

High school students practiced close observation when drawing a variety of natural elements. Students began by creating thumbnail drawings using a view-finder. Expanding upon prior knowledge, students used compositional strategies such as breaking the edges of the paper, zooming in, and the rule of thirds in order to successfully fill the page. Students were challenged to fill most of the paper with subject, leaving only a small portion of the paper as negative space.
