Surrealist Collage

Students explored collage through the lens of surreal artworks. They analyzed examples of collage using transparency, juxtaposition and scale. After becoming familiar with each concept students sifted through magazines to build a bank of potential images to use for their collages. Each students' collage included at least two of the surrealist elements they studied.  Students quickly learned that the images they found would help foster their ideas. Students employed both inductive and deductive thinking while designing compositions that worked successfully. They experienced parts of an artistic process that includes trial and error, editing, and design thinking strategies. Students tapped into a variety of habits of mind including the development of patience, persistence through struggle, decision making in the absence of rules, the development of craft and risk taking.
